For those of you who do not know me, I am John’s brother Joe. Hello everyone. Thank you all for coming today. John would have been humbled and honoured to see you all here today for him.
To start I have to thank our two sisters Anne Marie and Annette for wanting their own bedrooms so many years ago. Because of them John and I got to move to our bedroom in the basement, our own personal apartment.
Those early years spent together growing up and sharing a room together are full of special memories. John was a clean fanatic, so that worked out well for me, a personal house keeper!
For those of you who knew John well, you know that John was kind, loving, considerate and a bit of a perfectionist, in both his personal and professional life. From sharing a huge paper route to working together in the family business, John was always there to help and support family. I knew then he would move on to bigger and better things to create his own legacy.
John was a devoted husband and father. He always put his family first. He often had stories to share about his adventures with Angela and was so proud of all that Katherine and Thomas had accomplished.
It was nothing for John, Angela, Katherine and Thomas to drive the four hours to Perth to see Mom and Dad and make supper or treat them to supper and you would often find John cleaning the house while visiting. He just couldn’t help it!
Just this past March on his 64th Birthday, as I would always do, a call was made to John to tease him about his birthday. I started off with “Happy Birthday, Mr Peabody” and John with his kindhearted laugh commented, “ I forgot about that nickname. We both laughed!” For those of you who don’t know, on family road trips we would only be on the road a short time when John would announce that he had to go to the bathroom. He soon earned the nickname Mr. Peabody.
On leaving John’s room after a visit at the hospital in Markham, I said “Good-Bye John” and he kindly replied “Bye Joe”
Well John until we meet again rest peacefully my little brother.

Who was John Q.
He was a son, brother, husband, father, brother in law, boss, employee, neighbour and friend.
Growing up he was not only my "older brother" but a friend, a playmate, someone I could rely on for help whether it be with homework, a chore, a drive to school or a friends or to give me advice. He was smart, reliable, kind, generous and thoughtful.
John loved to draw. He would spend hours at the table with his scribblers. The drawings were complex pictures of tanks, cars, planes, hills, trees and little men with guns, arrows, swords and lines representing trajectories. They were his version of todays video games. Brilliantly drawn and played on paper and in his mind
We grew up in a great neighbourhood with lots of kids around. Johnny as some called him was always willing to join in a game of hide and seek, frozen tag or kick the can. He would even turn the rope for us so we could skip.
John was well loved and respected in high school. He was always an amazing student and member of the student council for years. His position as you can all guess was treasurer. The books were immaculate. In perfect shape and balanced to a tee (that is until I came along a couple years later and destroyed them. Accounting was not my forte!)
John always had a keen interest in my friends. I can still remember the day he asked me if I thought my friend Angela would go out with him. So I asked her and she said yes. The rest is history. I knew he would be an amazing partner for my good friend and would treat her with the kindness, respect and love anyone would like.
As time progresses we all became busy with our own lives. Jobs, children, homes. It didn't seem to matter how busy John was with his life if you called him he would be there at the drop of a hat.
It was nothing for him to jump in the car and drive to Perth for the day to visit then drive back home the same day. He was always willing to help out with our parents needs. He would cook. clean until things sparkled and take care of their finances. No job was beneath him.
I loved when they came to visit me before a family gathering. Angela would help me in the kitchen and John would you guessed it CLEAN. My floors never looked better and Those spiders and their webs never knew what hit them.
John, we were so blessed to have you with us for the past 64 years. You touched and enhanced so many people's lives. Your charm, quirky sense of humour, generosity, kindness and wonderful disposition will be missed but never forgotten. May you rest free from the pain you endured for the last couple of months and be in peace.
Love Annette

Dearest John, we are beyond sad to see you leave us. Know that "your candle burned out long before your legend ever did".
I will forever cherish the times around your kitchen table with you and Angela when miraculously a glass of wine and dark chocolate would appear, or our dishes would just disappear, you were always the perfect host.
I'm so grateful for the many times you were generous with your advice no matter what the topic or situation - work, kids, relationship, legal, tax, gardening, a problem with the house - you always knew what to do and the best way to approach it. Truly a wonderful, caring and supportive friend. What a legacy you have given us, we can all aspire to be as true and dedicated friend, partner, parent as you were. We will so miss you.
Angela, Thomas and Kate, our hearts are broken with you. Know that you can count on Syd, Spence and I will to always be here for you. Sending lots of love and kisses.

To Angela, Katherine and Thomas, and Mary, Anne, Joe and Annette. Though all of us in the extended family (relatives and friends) share the pain of the loss of John, the pain experienced by those closest to him is the greatest. What I want to share with you is that after the veil of grief has passed as it will in time, what remains are the memories we all created with him during his life. In time they will be a source of joy and camaraderie in our lives as we share and relive them with one and other.
The other gift John has given us is his legacy. The leadership, kindness, humour and love he shared represent an opportunity for us to reflect on our own lives and allow him to make us better by having known him. In so doing, we have an opportunity to follow his example in what remains of our time on earth.
Just as John is now free from the pain of his illness, may we all soon be free of the pain of our loss and take comfort from the gifts of memories that John created, and the example he set for us. We are all better for having known him.

John, or JQ as we used to call him, was everyone's favorite boss at Dorchester and related companies. That's because he was not only very knowledgeable but also a great teacher and a hard-working leader who led by example. He was always fair and treated everyone equally regardless of colour, origin or gender - truly a decent human being.
In life, John and I got "sepated" 3 times but then my employment compass always led me back to him and each time he welcomed me back with open arms. This tragedy separates us for the 4th time but although my heart breaks, it is comforting to think, there is a possibility of a 4th reunion. So, how about it, John? Will you hire me again?
In the meantime, may you rest in peace, my dear friend.

For the first 20 years of our lives, John and I shared a special bond that only brothers can share. We played together, we went to school together and we worked as teenagers in the family business together.
As kids we would often drive mom a little crazy playing hockey with wooden mini sticks in the kitchen. The noise of the balls hitting the rads and the cheers as we scored were rather annoying as Mom tried to cook and clean up the kitchen.
Growing up, John and I always shared a bedroom. At first our room was upstairs and then to give room for the two girls to have their own rooms, John and I moved to the renovated basement. We thought it was just GREAT in the basement. It was like having your own apartment with John as our own personal cleaner! John would often keep a couple of hard covered books beside the bed to throw at me when I started to snore.
I can remember many nights waiting for Mom and Dad to go to bed so we could stay up and watch the black and white T.V. which was right by Dad’s office downstairs. We would often watch Hockey Night in Canada. For many of you who are still waiting for the cup to come back to Toronto…. one of our late night watches was The Toronto Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup in 1967.
John has left us all too soon and our hearts are broken. He will be dearly missed. John may be gone but our memories live on and will keep us connected.
Until we meet again, rest peacefully my little brother.
Love, Joe

We have been fortunate to call John a friend and neighbour for over twenty years.
He was the epitome of a family oriented, hard working gentleman, always busy doing something around the property
We will remember him for his kindness and generosity, always there if you needed help.
His love of his dogs was obvious to anyone who knew him and his dedication to their health and well being was unmatched.
We will miss his smile as he waved and drove around on his John Deere cutting his grass (kind of his second office ).

John and I worked together for some 40 years building a business that was a poorly capitalized start-up when we began.
As chief financial officer, John was the company anchor, a calm presence in the severe ups and downs of the real estate economy.
Our accounting and tax records were meticulous. Our staff stable. John always knew exactly what was going on.
People loved working for John, and many have remained with us for decades.
John had uncompromising integrity. He never wavered.
About four years ago we had our first tax audit by the Canada Revenue Agency. Our company was complex, operating in both the US and Canada. Our financial and tax structure was complicated, stretching across borders and in multiple activities. It would have been a tax auditor's dream.
The CRA took over 18 months doing the audit. John had to retrieve 10 years of records back from storage. Boxes were piled four high against a long wall at our office.
To no avail. The CRA found not a single cent out of order, because nothing was out of order.
John and Angela are family.
John will be missed.

John came into the world on 27°F day March 27, 1959 He was joyfully greeted by siblings Anne Marie and Joseph and proud dad Gus. John provided a challenge for his mom as he suffered from colic. He quickly grew to become a charming little boy who loved to play with trucks and building blocks.
On family trips the family would only be on the road a short time when John would announce that he had to go to the bathroom. He soon earned the nickname Mr. Peabody.
In his teen years he spent hours in front of the mirror in the powder room making sure every single hair was in place.
John did extremely well in school and graduated as an Ontario scholar. While in high school he met the love of his life Angela a friend of his younger sister Annette.
John went to Queens and graduated with an Honours BComm while working in the family fruit and vegetable wholesale business during the summers.
Post-graduation John and Angela married and had two beautiful children Katherine and Thomas.
John successfully wrote the exams to become a CPA and started his career with Coopers and Lybrand.
After a few years at Cooper’s, John joined The Dorchester Corporation and eventually became EVP and CFO working alongside founder Maurice Shohet who considers John the son he did not have.
John and Angela loved to entertain family. However, John being a perfectionist and fastidious about how his home looked would wash the pots and floor before sitting down to dinner as the food grew cold and the rest of us waited.
John doted over his Papillon dogs Peppy, Bismarck and Spikey. He loved gardening and maintaining his beautiful estate home in Uxbridge and helping Angela with her custom home building company.
John was devoted to his parents and thought nothing of driving 3 ½ hours to Perth and back home the same day. He and Angela loved going on cruises to the Caribbean and cruising in his Mustang convertible.
His generosity saw no bounds and he was the first to step up and help family and friends. John had so many things he wanted to do but in 8 weeks lost the battle with pancreatic cancer .
John will be sorely missed by family, friends and associates. May he rest in peace.
His loving sister Anne Marie

Over the past several weeks I have been reflecting back over the years that I have known John. I met him first on my Pee Wee hockey team. His brother Joe was his idol at the time, because Joe was an aggressive skater. He gave it up not long afterwards and I could see that he was more of a thinker than athlete. Later I found John as my assistant Chemistry Lab partner at PDCI. Maybe I was his assistant. One day while in class with the Bunsen burner I spotted a group of jars on the shelf. The masking tape on the side stated that the jars contained “Salmon Cultures”. I asked John if he would like some fresh cooked salmon. Grabbed the tongs and began to heat it up. John smirked and said “that’s a bad idea Jeff”! Don’t do it; but it was too late …..Poink!!! Off popped the lid and a puitrid smell engulfed the room. The class was immediately dismissed, in fact the entire wing of the highschool was dismissed for health reasons.

Our earliest memories of Uncle John are from Harvey st. while visiting Grandma and Grandpa, often with a video camera or camera in hand. He is the only reason we have videos documenting us at a young age and we are forever grateful for his willingness to share his love of technology by capturing some of these special moments, that we can now share with our own families.
At other times you could find him trying to set something new up for Grandma and Grandpa to make their daily lives better, often trying to convince or reassure Grandpa that it would be easy to use and he was a phone call away if it didn’t work.
When Uncle John and Aunt Angela came to Perth for a weekend they would often offer to cook a meal for the family and invite everyone to come and enjoy. Uncle John could always be found before and after dinner diligently washing the dishes and meticulously cleaning up.
He would often reminisce and have a story or two about our Dad as a kid and the antics that happened while they shared a room. We will always cherish these memories he shared.
He always had a sincere and genuine interest in all of us and his kind and giving spirit will continue to inspire us to be better people every day. He will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.
With love,

I have known John since I was a young lad. He was on my Pee Wee hockey team. He wanted to be like his brother Joe an agile skilled player. But god had other plans for him. So later he was my lab parter at PDCI in Chemistry class. I don’t know who was the lead and who was the assistant but I called him Dr Chemistry and he called me Mr Fantastic. One day I spotted a group of jars on the shelf when in the lab with the Bunsen Burner flaming away. The masking tape on the jars said “Salmon Culture” on them. I said Dr Chemistry would you like some fresh salmon and commenced to grab a jar with the tongs and started to heat it up. He said Jeff, bad idea, bad idea but it was too late. “Pop”. The lid blew off and they had to evacuate the class and eventually the entire school as the foul smell migrated through the ventilation system. I think that was the day that Dr Chemistry didn’t want anymore fantastic. Or so I thought. A few years later he married my sister Angela. I don’t think in the years that followed that I ever cooked for John again. Which brings me to the best part. John and I became not only brother in laws. We became good friends. We enjoyed many vacations, brunches and just hanging out with John and Angela. I even saw a humorous side of him quite often which was not evident in that Chemistry Class. John was and always will be a Saint to me. Always offering to help someone in need and if you were buying anything he knew exactly what Consumer Reports suggests. I asked him if he needed anything the last time we spoke but he said no. That’s the type of person he was always thinking of others, not himself. I will miss you brother and I will always take care of your family Angela, Katherine and Tom.
Rest in peace my friend till we meet again.
Jeff Wodzak.
