Obituary of Halina Dragon
With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to our beloved Helen Dragon, who departed this world at the remarkable age of 101. Helen’s journey through life was a testament to strength, resilience, and boundless love. Beloved wife for 72 years to the late Leon Dragon. She was a wonderful Mom to her two children Zbigniew Ted (Dianne) and Elizabeth (Mitch), and most adoring grandmother to Jennifer (Michał) and Matthew (Caroline). She is also survived by her nephew Ed (Karen) and family, her family in Poland, Germany, and the USA.
Halina was born January 19, 1923 in Staszów, Poland. Predeceased by her parents (Feliksa and Stanisław Kwiatkowski). She was the last remaining sister of six (Krystyna, Olenka, Wladyslawa, Stanislawa, and Marisia).
In 1948, Halina came to Montreal, Canada with her sister Stasia as a seamstress. She had a passion for sewing, a deep appreciation of style, and took great pride in her appearance. In 1949, on New Years Eve in Montreal, she met the love of her life Leon Dragon, and they wed six months later. In 1955, the family moved to Oshawa as Leon obtained a job at General Motors.
Halina spent many years volunteering with the Ladies of St Hedwig's Parish church and was a proud member of the ladies auxiliary at the General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans Association in Oshawa. She was proud of her Polish heritage and endeavoured to share her culture, traditions and faith with her children and grandchildren.
Although her life was not always easy, she graciously learned from those experiences and remained faithful, positive and strong.
Many things in life gave Halina joy, including tending her gardens, travelling and spending time at the cottage with her family. Halina’s gardens were her sanctuary, she enjoyed surrounding her home with beauty and sharing that beauty with those she loved. Any time her family wanted to go on a trip, she was always happy and excited to go. She traveled many times to Florida, across Canada, USA, and Germany as well as returning to her beloved homeland of Poland.
Halina loved spending time at her cottage, she enjoyed the fresh air, sunbathing on the deck, spending time in the water (only at depths of up to her knees), gardening and playing her favourite game of Rummikub.
Halina was known for being an amazing cook and baker. She held all other food to her high standards and had a talent for making amazing dishes with little preparation.
Preparing food for her family was one of her greatest joys in life and nothing gave her more joy than to see her loved ones gather around her table.
We are grateful for the care the staff on the 7th floor of Lakeridge Health provided.
The family would like to express our most sincere gratitude to those who helped care for her and were by her side, lovingly supporting her in her time of need.
We will never forget her infectious smile, her sense of humor, the wink of an eye and the cute faces she made to let us know how much she adored all of us. She was truly one of a kind and words cannot express how much she will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St Hedwig’s Parish Renovation fund would be appreciated.
