From Arlene or Vie from the Brathwaite’s Family:
Mrs Mercurius, Ms Mac, Mom, Aunty Doreen, Aunt, Cousin Doreen, are all titles of this lady before us. There are so many thoughts and images going through my head, I wanted to share all, but time does not permit me to do so.
My Family and I arrived in Plaisance, a village in Guyana, South America, in 1959. I am the second child of my parents, and we met the Mercurius' Family, who were the first to greet us with open arms. We have been friends since then. Joy and my deceased, older sister Brenda became friends. Sandra and I became friends. Our other siblings also became friends.
We tried Aunty Doreen, but that didn't stick, so throughout all the 65 years we've referred to her as Ms Mac. We lived as relatives, doing what they did, liking the same things, attending the same parties, just living like close relatives live.
Her three nieces made their monthly visits to have their hair done. She even got my now deceased Mom to become a hairdresser because she was the head hairdresser in Plaisance. Before that, she styled our hair to go to those parties, she made matching outfits for Joy and Sandra, while our Mom also made our matching outfits.
When we were children, we loved hanging out with them. It seemed like they enjoyed more freedom than we did. I don't remember them getting spanked, certainly not like we got. It was recently that Joy told me that Mommy used to "tear we tail", that was news to me, I always thought that this quiet woman could do no harm.
Ms Mac made me cry! She would run us down to see what made us hot, “wha mek yuh brazen suh”! She would call me Elvira, and I would cry! It was not until we migrated to America in 1971, and I heard the song Elvira, that I became okay with my name! She made me grow up!
Whenever there was a function, she was in the middle, and she never forgot to pass on her talents to her children. She was a great cook, baking the best pastries, majoring in cheese straws.
Everyone around liked Ms Mac. My Mom loved her, and about six of their friends often kept get-togethers, usually at Ms Mac’s home, having us peeping at them from one of the bedrooms, as they danced and ate food brought from the different homes. Poor Fitz, they were all ladies’ parties with few occasional times including men.
In her later years, she would put on shows of how to get down, how to whine. Play some music now and watch Doreen get up and dance!
We thank the Lord for putting our families together. On behalf of our entire family, to your entire family, thank you for acknowledging us, for receiving us as Family! Rest In Peace!!!
