Obituary of Barbara Kunz
March 12, 1932 – June 29, 2024
Peacefully at Lakeridge Pickering-Ajax Hospital, on the afternoon of June 29th, 2024. Barbara was 92 years of age and passed in the supportive presence of loving family.
Barbara (nee Keppler), is survived by sons Wally (Cindy), Kevin (Deanna), Steve, and daughter-in-law Toni. Predeceased by children Richard, Caroline, Karl-Heinz and Ronald.
Predeceased by sister Katharina Feil (Karl). Loved and missed by brother Peter Lego (Gabriele), sister Helene Folk (Ronald) and her many nieces and nephews.
Loving “Oma” to Daniel, Michael, Lauren, Kody, Charity, Angeline, Jessica, and their families, including great-grandchildren.
Born in Gertianosch, Romania to Johann Keppler and wife Magdalena (nee Streirmarter), Barbara and her family were displaced from their home in the midst of conflict in Europe, and walked with other refugees to reach Vienna, Austria. Barbara remained in Austria after WW2, working in the childcare and hospitality fields.
She emigrated to Canada post-war, where she met and married her husband, Heinrich (Henry) Kunz. The Kunz’s settled in Scarborough, Ontario in 1962, and remained married for 66 years until Henry’s passing in January, 2023.
Barbara worked full-time while raising her large family, employed by Supreme Aluminum and Lily Cups.
Upon Henry’s retirement in 1987, the couple moved to Fenelon Falls, Ontario. Barbara worked for several more years at Eganridge Resort, and enjoyed a close community of neighbourhood friends.
In 2015, Barbara and Henry moved to Pickering, Ontario to be closer to family during their later years.
Barbara enjoyed trips with family to Mexico, Florida, Europe, and the United States. She was an exceptional cook and baker who loved to entertain and socialize.
Barbara met each challenge presented to her with unrelenting strength. She remained true to her values, was a pillar of strength to those that relied on her, and delighted in the love and laughter of family and friends, up until her final moments.
Barbara will be laid to rest, attended by immediate family, at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Whitby, Ontario.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
