Obituary of John Campbell
John “Big John” Campbell, 76, of Scarborough, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2024.
John was born on December 2, 1947, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Major Donald and Annabella Campbell. As the child of a military family, he moved frequently and spent many summers in the cadet corps, where he proved to be a gifted sharpshooter, rising to the rank of Master Cadet. He later joined the Cameron Highlanders of Canada.
“Big John” excelled in sports, including baseball, hockey, and football, playing for the teams at Neil McNeil and Cedarbrae high schools, and later at the University of Toronto. After graduation, he put his love of strategy to work in various leadership positions at Bell Canada, ultimately retiring as VP of Operations in 2004, concluding a career spanning four decades across multiple cities. Over these years, John made many deep and lasting friendships that continued until his final days.
A devoted husband and father, John married his beloved wife, Maureen (“Marni”), in 1971. Together, they raised two children. He had a passion for golf and cherished time spent with his extended family and friends at his cottage in the Muskokas. His sense of humor, unwavering dedication to his ethical principles, and keen insights will be remembered by all who knew him.
John is survived by his wife, Marni; his children, John (Marie) and Colette (Jason); and his grandchildren John, Samantha, Ian and Annabelle. He is fondly remembered by his brothers, Russel (Donna), Colin (Gail), and Donald (Jane); his sister, Margaret Mary (John); his brother-in-law, Ian (Marlene); cousins; and 16 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at De Stafano Funeral Home in Oshawa from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at Holy Family Church in Whitby.
