GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE.
I AM AILEEN YHAP, DAVID’S MOTHER IN LAW.
IT IS WITH A VERY HEAVY HEART THAT I AM STANDING HERE TO GIVE A TRIBUTE
TO DAVID ON BEHALF OF MY FAMILY AND I.
DAVID BECAME A PART OF OUR FAMILY IN JUNE 1982 AT THE AGE OF 18 . ACTUALLY ON
AJAX DAY. EVERYONE WHO KNEW DAVID WELL, WOULD KNOW HE WAS PERSISTENT
WHEN HE HAS AN AGENDA, HE DOES NOT GIVE UP UNTIL THE MISSION IS
ACCOMPLISHED. ON AJAX DAY, DAVID CALLED OUR HOME PHONE THREE TIMES
ASKING OF ANDRE, NOTE, ANDRE AND NOT ANDREA. EACH TIME I TOLD HIM THERE IS
NO ANDRE HERE AND HE HAD THE WRONG NUMBER. AT THE FOURTH CALL HE SAID,
HEAR ME OUT, DON’T HANG UP THE PHONE, THERE IS A YOUNG LADY WHO ATTENDS
DENNIS O’CONNOR, HIGH SCHOOL SHE IS SOME SORT OF A CHINESE MIXTURE AND
HAS LONG CURLY HAIR TO HER WAIST . I SAID OH, YOU MEAN ANDREA, YES SHE
LIVES HERE, HOLD ON, AND I WILL GET HER FOR YOU, THEY SPOKE AND DAVID
CAME OVER AS WE WERE ABOUT TO HAVE SUPPER, ANDREA INVITED HIM TO JOIN
US. HE MADE HIMSELF VERY COMFORTABLE, CHATTED WITH EVERYONE . WHEN HE
LEFT MY MOM. SAID, I LIKE HIM, HE IS SMART, WELL SPOKEN , HE IS INTELLIGENT &
HE IS EVEN GOOD LOOKING. MY MOM HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR.
FROM THERE, THE RELATIONSHIP STARTED NOT JUST WITH ANDREA BUT WITH THE
ENTIRE YHAP AND CHESNEY FAMILIES. OUR HOME BECAME HIS HOME AWAY FROM
HIS PARENTS HOME, HE WAS A PART OF OUR VACATIONS, FAMILY OUTINGS AND
EVERYTHING THAT WE DID AS A FAMILY. WE LOVED DAVID NOT AS A SON-IN-LAW
BUT AS A SON.
DAVID WAS LARGER THAN LIFE, HE BELIEVED IN LIFE, LOVE & LAUGH.ER. WHEN IT
CAME TO LOVE, HIS LOVE FOR OTHERS WAS UNMEASURABLE. HE WAS A TRUE
TESTAMENT OF THE COMMANDMENT OF JESUS CHRIST “ LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I
HAVE LOVED YOU” DAVID GAVE HIS ALL AND MORE. THE LOVE OF FAMILY, ALL OF HIS
ADOPTED CHILDREN, ( THE SOCCER KIDS) THE LOVE OF FRIENDS AND THE LOVE OF
WORK. DAVID GAVE 150 % OR MORE & UNSELFISHLY IN EACH AREA . HE WAS ALWAYS
WILLING TO GIVE OR TO SHARE, SPOKE NO ILL WORDS OF ANYONE, DAVID ALWAYS
SAID IF YOU HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY, DON’T SAY IT.
EVERYONE KNOWS THAT DAVID’S PASSION WAS HIS FAMILY, HIS WORK, AND HIS
MUSIC, HE LOVED THE MUSIC OF ROBERTA FLACK, NORA JONES, SIMPLY RED , THE
BEETLES, U2, QUEEN, SADE, NIRVANA, HE ESPECIALLY LOVED HIS JAZZ,. THERE ARE A
FEW BY HERBY HANCOCK THAT HE REALLY LOVED, NOW EVERY TIME I PASS HIS
MAN CAVE, I THINK OF HIM LYING ON THE SOFA WITH ONE OF HIS MANY
HEADPHONES ON , LISTENING TO HIS MUSIC WITH HIS LAPTOP OR IPAD
IN HIS HAND .WORKING AWAY OR READING. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT HE OBTAINED
HIS INSIGHT AND MOTIVATION WHILE LISTENING TO HIS MUSIC.
DAVID MADE EVERYTHING LOOK SIMPLE AND WOULD PUT IT IN LAYMAN’S TERMS SO
THAT EVERYONE COULD UNDERSTAND.
WHAT I ADMIRED MOST ABOUT DAVID IS HIS WORK ETHIC. HE WOULD DO ANY JOB TO
ACCOMPLISH HIS GOAL. DURING HIGH SCHOOL, DAVID WORKED SUMMERS WITH
MASON WINDOWS, EVENINGS AT MARY BROWN’S FRIED CHICKEN, IN COLLEGE AND
UNIVERSITY, HE WORKED AS A DISHWASHER AT BALLEYCLIFFE NURSING HOME, THEN
AS A BANK TELLER, MOVED UP TO EXTENDED HOURS SUPERVISOR, AFTER THAT
THE OFFICER IN CHARGF OF OPERATIONS AT UXBRIDGE BRANCH AND CONTINUED
COLLEGE IN THE EVENINGS. AT ONE TIME, DAVID DID THREE JOBS DURING THE
SUMMER.
.WHEN HE GRADUATED FROM HIS SOFTWARE PROGRAM, DAVID WAS BLESSED WITH
THE OPPORTUNITY TO MOVE INTO THE BANK’S” IT &S“ DEPARTMENT AS A
PROGRAMMER, DAVID THOUGHT HIMSELF DIFFERENT COMPUTER LANGUAGES, WAS
EXCELLENT AT WHAT HE DID AND WORKED HIS WAY UP TO HIS LAST POSITION OF
VICE PRESIDENT, ANTI MONEY LAUNDERING AND COMPLIANCE TECHNOLOGY .
DAVID WAS ALSO ONE OF THE FIRST BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
ONTARIO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. (UOIT).
DAVID WAS A GADGET FREAK, EVERY ELECTRONIC GADGET THAT CAME OUT,
DAVID RESEARCHED AND PURCHASED IT, IF HE THOUGH IT WAS A GOOD GADGET
THAT HIS BOYS AND/OR THEIR FRIENDS WOULD ENJOY. HE WAS VERY OFTEN PART OF
THE GAMES THEY PLAYED EVEN THOUGH MICHAEL, HIS OLDER SON, NOW LIVES IN
QUEBEC, THAT DID NOT STOP THEM FROM HAVING FULL AND MEANINGFUL
INTERACTIONS WITH THE GAMES AND GADGETS.
WITH HIS YOUNGER SON, MATHEW, THE TWO WOULD HAVE THEIR HEADPHONES ON
AT HOME, MICHAEL DOING THE SAME AT HIS HOME , THEY WOULD BE COMPETING IN
VARIOUS GAMES., YOU COULD HEAR HIM FROM HIS MAN CAVE LAUGHING HIS HEART
OUT & SAYING, I BEAT YOU BOYS AND MATHEW SAYING FROM THE STUDY WE
ALLOWED YOU TO WIN. DAD, EVEN WHEN DAVID LOST HE WOULD STILL LAUGH AND
SAY OKAY, I WILL BEAT YOU BOYS THE NEXT TIME AROUND. .
HIS LATEST PASSION WAS WIFI RADIOS. NOT SO LONG AGO HE CALLED TO SAY “MOM I
HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU, I AM COMING OVER TO SET IT UP: IT WAS A WIFI RADIO.
WE CALLED DAVID THE “GADGET MAN”.
ONE HIDDEN TALENT AND PASSION THAT NOT TOO MANY HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF
KNOWING IS THAT DAVID WROTE BEAUTIFUL POETRY. FOR VALENTINE’S DAY,
ANNIVERSARIES, ETC, HE WROTE ANDREA POEMS WHICH WERE ACCOMPANIED
WITH A BLUE TINTED ROSE, HENCE THE BLUE THEME FOR TODAY.
DAVID , YOU HAVE GONE TOO SOON, YOU WERE IN THE PRIME OF YOUR LIFE,
WE WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WERE TAKEN SO SOON OR SO SUDDENLY
FROM US.
WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS THE GRIEF WE FEEL, YOU HAVE TOUCHED THE
LIVES OF SO MANY, YOU WERE A WONDERFUL PERSON. WE KEEP EXPECTING YOU TO
WALK THROUGH THE DOOR FROM ONE OF YOUR OVERSEAS TRIPS, SAYING HONEY
I’M HOME , BOYS WHER ARE YOU.
THE TEARS KEEP STREAMING DOWN OUR FACES, THE EMPTINESS WE FEEL IS HARD
TO FILL, THE PAIN WE FEEL IS SO GREAT , SOMETIMES IT IS HARD TO BREATHE. BUT
WE KNOW YOU WOULD WANT US TO HEAL AND FIND COMFORT AS WE GO THROUGH
THIS DIFFICULT TIME. WE ALSO KNOW THAT GOD IS WITH US AND HE WILL GIVE US
THE STRENGTH TO MAKE IT THROUGH THE COMING DAYS AND THE TIME AHEAD OF
US.
GOD SAW THAT YOU WERE TIRED AND SAID COME HOME MY SON AND I WILL GIVE

For those of you that do not know me, my name is Stacey Tucker and David Woolley is my brother-in-law, my colleague, my mentor, my friend. I am so privileged to have spent most of my life knowing him.
I would like to share with you a few memories of Dave that demonstrate the man he was, and the impact he had on myself and my family.
I have known David since I was 18 years old. Our families are exceptionally close, our children more like siblings than cousins, he is the god-father of my daughter. I have countless fond memories of vacations, camping trips, soccer games and tournaments, and hours of Mario Cart competitions that were so enjoyable because of Dave and his terrific sense of humour and passion to make every moment of life memorable.
Dave was known as just ‘Uncle’ to my daughter. Fun ‘Uncle’. Larger than life ‘Uncle’. She often had an entourage of chatty girlfriends wherever she went and Dave always welcomed them, laughed with them, encouraged them and protected them. The all called him ‘Uncle’. Just a couple weeks ago, it was Dave that picked them up at 2:00 in the morning after a night of birthday partying and ensured they got home safely because that’s the kind of man Dave was.
As you all know, Dave had a brilliant mind and love of technology. Constantly reading and learning something new and inspiring others to do the same. Without Dave I certainly would not be in the career I am now. I knew nothing about computer programming, but he had faith in me and spent countless hours coaching me to qualify for the Scotiabank Mainframe training program. After the first year on the job, I thought he might have regretted assisting me since every dinner conversation became about the Cobol, IMS, DB2, program abends…but nooooo. At that time Dave was leading the Bank to the Internet age, and he says ‘Stace, you’ve got to learn Java’ and hands me a Java in a Nutshell book. I felt like saying ‘you know Dave, not everyone enjoys reading computer programming books for fun like you do’. But Dave never gave up on me and would not stop teaching and encouraging me until I became a Java programmer. I know there are many Scotiabankers that were inspired by him as a mentor, a leader, or a friend. Dave shared everything of himself with others because that’s the kind of man Dave was.
Besides technology, Dave’s passion was his family. Andrea was his queen since high school. ‘Andi’ he affectionately called her. Dae Dae she called him. He was always spoiling her with lavish gifts, love and laughter. Though he had extraordinary success in his career with Scotiabank, Dave’s greatest accomplishment in life was raising his boys to be strong, thoughtful, compassionate gentlemen. They are his legacy and I see his traits and teachings in their words and actions every day.
The last thing I will tell you about Dave is very, very personal to me. Many years ago I was at a very low point in my life. Dave came to visit me and said, ‘you have to get better Stace, I need you. I only have brothers, you are my sister and I promise you I will always be here for you’. Dave never, ever broke that promise because that’s the kind of man Dave was. I only wish I had told him, ‘Dave I don’t have any brothers and you are my brother’. Dave I am stronger now because of you and although I can’t be here for you now, I can promise you that I will always be here for Andrea and your boys, no matter what they need, until I see you again. I love you Dave, may you rest in peace.

I am truly sorry to hear of David’s passing. He was one of the great ones at Scotiabank and was so well respected by all who knew him. He was never one to shy away from a challenge or from challenging others to be their best. I had the pleasure of working closely with him for a couple of years on the loans application and we accomplished so much. As a leader, he often directed the teams to investigate the best solutions available — always thinking of what was best for the bank. My deepest condolences to his family.

Dave hired me into Scotiabank in 2015, and quite frankly was the main reason I joined the bank. My first instinct was that I would have a good boss in Dave, and I was right. What I didn't foresee was that I would make a new friend in Dave, and I count myself among the hundreds of people who will always remember him fondly in that capacity.
Farewell to a great professional and an even greater human being. I will take your examples of true professionalism and simple human compassion with me throughout the rest of my career/life.

I knew David for several years before I retired in 2005; in fact Dave was the CO-MC of that event with his quick wit and great personality Dave was always considered invaluable by me and the rest of my User community. May he Rest In Peace
