We have many happy memories at your family cottage on Dam lake, as well as picking cherries from the big cherry tree in your parents backyard, thank you! It’s Mariola here to share some memories.
I remember when we first met when I was around 13 in about 1975. These were exciting times just
after Poland came 3 rd in the World Cup.
You swooped in to visit us in England from across the pond with great energy and verve but also as a
really caring uncle and brother - these were tough times for my family. And you understood hard
times.
There were relatives from France and Poland gathered to re-unite and not enough room in the
house for us all. It was in many ways, a happy and unique occasion – Poland wasn’t liberated again
until 1989 and we were still sending boxes of food and clothes across until then. I had to sleep next
door as our neighbours had a spare room - kind people, appreciating kind people.
Anyway, you and I went shopping to Southend-on-Sea but this was a conversation, an exploration
and not a shopping trip at all – we talked about education, challenge, courage and curiosity. And for
a young teenager, you treated me as a young adult and cared and were interested and gave me so
much encouragement – something you continued to do throughout my life and I cannot thank you
enough after so many years.
It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I bid you farewell dear Olek, dear Voyek.

A full and amazing life has finally come to an end. Aleksander faced many adversities almost unfathomable to comprehend and he prevailed with his faith and a stoicism to be admired. A lust for life and its opportunities, he was supported unfailingly by his beloved Joan and his family. Of special personal memory were lively conversations at 'the cottage' - always with the obligatory shot or two of vodka, no matter what the time of day. Swimming in the lake with his inflated truck tire remains a vivid vision. An incisive mind interested in points of view from all quarters, Aleksander had an impish wit, when necessary, to skewer the pompous. He is now with his Joan and his maker. God bless.
